With the University of Aberdeen exchange programme, you can study in another European country as part of your degree. The credits gained from study abroad count towards your Aberdeen degree programme - so it won't add an extra year to your studies! Participants also receive a grant to help with any extra costs incurred.
Who would this option suit?
- European exchange is possible as an undergraduate student at Level 2 and Level 3. Please note that some subjects do not permit Level 3 exchange, or will only allow students to study abroad for a single semester. Check with the Go Abroad Tutor for your subject/s for restrictions.
- European exchange is also possible for PhD students, who wish to spend an extended period at a partner university.
- European exchange is NOT suitable for Postgraduate Taught Masters students - please look at our other options to find a more suitable opportunity.
Eligibility criteria
In order to apply, students should:
- have an overall C average, and be on track to achieve
- 120 Credit points at the end of 1st year AND/OR
- 240 Credit points at the end of 2nd year
- have the support of your Go Abroad Tutor/s (you don't need to request this in advance - they will be contacted as part of the application process)
Important points to note
- There is a single application deadline (in January), regardless of whether you plan to study abroad in September or January.
- Bilateral agreements for 2024/25 are currently under negotiation, and therefore subject to change. Options will be finalised no later than January 2024.
Find out more about applying for European exchange on our How to Apply page.
How to search
The University of Aberdeen has partnerships with around 120 universities across Europe. As most European partnerships are subject-specific, opportunities available will depend on your degree programme. Students are only eligible to apply under subjects that are named in the title of their degree programme. Joint degree students can apply under either subject, provided that both subjects are taught at the partner in English. Where agreements are at School level, eg Biological Sciences, students from any subject within the school can apply, provided that relevant courses in English can be found. International Business students should look at agreements according to their degree track, eg Business Management.
Please browse our list of European partnerships below, ordered alphabetically by subject. Within each subject, they are ordered alphabetically by country.

Most of these destinations are open to students from all subject disciplines (with the exception of Medicine and Dentistry), on the provision that you can find suitable courses taught in English that meet the requirements of your degree programme.
Where these are restricted to one or two subjects, or we know these destinations to be unsuitable for certain degree programmes, we have noted this, though this list is not exhaustive.

The History Department is very keen to encourage and support students thinking about going abroad either for a year or a semester. Normally, students go abroad the whole of Year 2 or one semester in Year 3.
History does not require any specific course matching. So, you are free to take any history courses you wish. On the Exchange Study Plan, you are asked to give an idea of what courses you might take. That will give the Go Abroad Tutor in History an idea of what you're thinking to take. But, the key thing is you're not trying to match any courses you might have taken here at your university abroad.
The History Department want you to take advantage of all the unique offerings abroad not replicate something here, and they will do their best to help you if you want to go abroad.
