Maastricht University (UM) is believed to be one of the most international university in the Netherlands and, with more than 20,000 students and 4,400 employees, is still growing. Across student and faculty, over 100 nationalities are represented. The university distinguishes itself with its innovative education model, international character and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. Maastricht University uses a teaching style, known as Problem-Based Learning (PBL). You work in small tutorial groups, engage in hands-on training and attend (far) fewer lectures. Under the supervision of a tutor, you team up with ten to fifteen students to tackle real-life challenges. PBL is an active way of learning that gives you better retention of knowledge, enhances your motivation and encourages you to develop skills that are essential for the labour market in the 21st century.
In short: PBL is all about you, the tutors are very approachable and you learn together in a dynamic way, helping form you into an assertive professional. PBL enables students to develop their professional expertise as well as their own talents, interests and skills in order to become true global citizens. Maastricht university was ranked as the 6th best “young” university in the world in 2020.
The beauty of the unique teaching style founded by the university means that you have the freedom to organise your own days, therefore you have ample opportunities to explore your surroundings at your own pace. The city is very culturally diverse which leads to amazing international experiences on offer. For instance, there are weekly markets and a number of theatres, museums and music venues. Maastricht is in the Netherlands, however it is very close to both Germany and Belgium for further exploring.
