Research Council Awards - NERC

Summary

NERC funds independent research, training and long-term monitoring in the environmental sciences. About half their budget goes to universities.

Description

Please note, this scholarship is only available for Aberdeen campus students.

NERC funds independent research, training and long-term monitoring in the environmental sciences. About half their budget goes to universities. Funding awards are split into a number of main areas:

Postgraduate training (studentships) - They fund around 1,100 PhD students and about 290 Masters students each year. Studentships are funded through university departments and NERC research centres, so they do not deal directly with applications from prospective students.

Studentship awards (Fellowships) - They fund around 100 Fellowships at any one time with 30 new awards each year. These awards provide opportunities for outstanding environmental scientists to devote their time to research, developing their research careers and producing work of international importance.

Fellowship awards (Research grants) - The NERC research grants schemes are intended to provide financial support for environmental scientists to carry out research projects of international quality at UK universities and other approved institutions. They provide a number of different schemes designed to support the varying needs of the community.

Research grants (Basic Support) - This covers:

  • Infrastructure - indirect costs of programmes and long-term research.
  • Specialist Major Infrastructure - such as in the Antarctic and the UK's Earth Observation subscriptions.
  • Major Capital Projects - such as buildings or ships
