ESRC-SGSSS Student-led Open Competition

Summary

The University of Aberdeen is a member institution of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (SGSSS-DTP). We welcome applications from excellent candidates who wish to pursue doctoral research that aligns with the disciplines listed below and who wish to be nominated for an ESRC studentship that will be held at the University of Aberdeen.

Description

Each award will cover the PhD tuition fee and a stipend at the UKRI level.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the University of Aberdeen PhD entry requirements and all ESRC eligibility requirements. (Please refer to the SGSSS Guidance for Students)

Application Procedure

Contact the relevant PGR Lead and potential supervisors at Aberdeen. Applications which do not have confirmation of support from the prospective supervisor or supervisory team will not be considered.

You must submit an application for PhD study, a UoA SGSSS Scholarship Application form and two academic references. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Step 1: Contact the relevant PGR Lead and potential supervisors at Aberdeen.

Step 2: If you are a first year PhD student at the University, see Step 3. If you do not already hold an offer of study, you must apply for a PhD programme at the University of Aberdeen. Your completed PhD study application must be submitted through the University’s online application system by 12 noon (GMT) on Friday, 25 October 2024. When completing the PhD application candidates should list "ESRC SGSSS DTP Scholarship" as the intended source of funding. Details of how to apply can be found on the Postgraduate Research website.

Step 3: Submit the completed scholarship application form and two academic references to pgrs-studentships@abdn.ac.uk by 12 noon (GMT) on Friday, 25 October 2024.

Alternatively, referees may submit academic references directly to pgrs-studentships@abdn.ac.uk using the file name “ESRC-SGSSS Academic Reference – Student surname, first name”. Applicants must ensure references are received by 12 noon on Friday, 25 October 2024. The PGRS will not contact referees on your behalf.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application by Friday, 8 November 2024.

Candidates who have been shortlisted for nomination to the SGSSS will be asked to create an account on SGSSS Apply and submit their application by 5 pm on Thursday, 21 November 2024.

Shortlisted candidates will be sent their Supervisor and Disciplinary Support Statements by 10 February 2025. The support statements must be uploaded to SGSSS Apply by the candidate before 18 February 2025. Besides uploading these documents, applicants will not be able to make any further application updates.

Applicants will be informed if they have progressed to the next stage of the competition at the end of the each review stage.

The SGSSS expect decisions on who has been selected to receive studentships to be communicated by 16 May 2025.
