Keeping safety on your radar with some savvy tips!
2024-02-21

So, you've entered the wonderful world of University, where you study into the night, Sir Duncan Rice Library becomes your second home, and late-night pizza orders in your flat are practically a rite of passage. But amidst the fun and frenzy, it's important to keep safety on your radar, especially when you find yourself burning the midnight oil. Fear not, we've got your back with some savvy tips to keep you safe and sound:

1. Keep Your Crew in the Loop:

Tell your squad, family, and whoever else needs to know, where you are going. Keep them updated on when you’re leaving, where you are going and when you expect to get home. This not only prevents unnecessary freak-outs but also ensures someone's got your back if needed.

2. Partner up:

Remember, you're not alone in this Uni adventure! Stick together when walking to the bus stop or your flat. If you see a friend flying solo, offer to be their wing person. Safety in numbers, right?

3. Campus security:

Campus security is your BFF. You can find their details on the back of your Student ID, store their digits (01224 27 33 27) in your phone for any situations on campus. They've got your back faster than you can say "safety first!". But remember that if you need urgent assistance, you should always call 999.

4. Light Up Your Path:

Stick to well-lit areas like a glow-stick. If you spot an area with broken lights around campus, be sure to report it to Campus Security. And as tempting as shortcuts may be, take the scenic route for peace of mind and get your steps in. Walking with friends makes the journey home more fun too.

And why walk when you can roll? If you drive to campus, grab some pals, and turn your journey home into a carpool karaoke session. Plus, more eyes on the road means safer travels.

5. App-solutely Safe:

Embrace the digital age with safety app bSafe.

The bSafe app turns your smartphone into a personal security device that lets you create your own safety network and protect each other. It has features such as sharing your location on a map with friends, activate an alarm or the SOS feature to automatically record audio and video.

6. Pause your Playlist:

Save your jam sessions for daylight hours. If you must listen to something, turn your volume down and stay alert to your surroundings.

7. Park Smart:

Parking can be tough, but if you are intending to hang around to study a little later in the evening consider scoring a parking spot closer to your study spot. If that’s not a possibility, buddy up with a friend to walk to your car.

Remember folks, safety is key to enjoying those late-night study sessions and campus adventures. So, follow these tips, stay vigilant, and get home to unwind after a hard day's grind.
