Net Zero is at the heart of the Aberdeen 2040 strategy. It sets out a high-level ambition of achieving Net Zero, measured in terms of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, before 2040.
n 2023, through the Sustainable Development Committee, a Net Zero Strategies & Targets Working Group was established to develop a document that would, for the first time, comprehensively capture the breadth and depth of action likely to be required to deliver on that commitment and to ensure that we contribute positively to national climate goals.
The draft Net Zero Strategy expands on that high-level commitment. It articulates a series of targets and pathways and anticipates other developments that are likely to be necessary to make that commitment a reality.
The Net Zero Strategy follows a “whole institution approach”, recognising that sustainability in general but Net Zero in particular, needs to be seen as the responsibility of the entire University community, with every student, staff member, academic School, and Professional Services Directorate having a role to play in reducing emissions.
The Working Group is seeking feedback from the University community on the draft Net Zero Strategy before a final version goes through the formal governance approval process in the new academic year.
