Industrial Action Update

Dear student,

You may be aware that members of the University and College Union (UCU) at 150 UK universities, including the University of Aberdeen, voted in favour of industrial action following two separate ballots on pay and pensions in October 2022. Three days of strikes took place at the end of November.

In the last few days UCU has announced a number of further days of strike action, with the first of these due to take place on Wednesday 1 February.

This is a national dispute and negotiations are ongoing at a national level. At a local level we are continuing to liaise closely with UCU throughout the dispute.

Only a proportion of our academic staff are members of the UCU, and not all members of UCU may participate in all strike days. This means that, as in November, the extent of action will vary across the University. Unless you hear otherwise you should attend class as normal – your School will be in touch with further information as far as they are able to do, given that staff do not have to inform the University in advance if they intend to take strike action.

While staff have the right to strike, we are doing all we can to minimise disruption to your teaching, learning, and student experience.

I will keep you updated on developments, and FAQs can be found here. In the meantime, any questions or concerns can be directed to academicservices@abdn.ac.uk.

Best wishes

Ruth
