Those who need to drive a minibus:
It is mandatory to attend MiDAS: Minibus Driver Awareness Training (even those who already have D1 on their licence are expected to do this training)
What does the training cover?
MiDAS is the gold standard training scheme for minibus drivers in the community transport sector and beyond, ensuring that minibus drivers are able to provide safe, legal and comfortable journeys.

Members of staff who wish to provide first aid to anyone who needs it in their first aid zone.
What does the training cover?
This is an SQA approved 3-day course that complies with the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Personnel are trained to a standard where they can administer basic First Aid in the workplace until more qualified help arrives.
For First Aiders with a current First Aid at Work Certificate and wish to continue being a first aider.
If current first aiders do not wish to renew their training, they should inform the H&S department who will remove their details from the First Aider list.
What does the training cover?
The course offers an overview of all subjects taught on the 3-day First Aid at Work course and also introduces any new techniques, legislation or guidelines that have arisen since the delegate originally qualified.
The course runs every week from Tuesday to Wednesday.
The refresher course can be booked up to 90 days before your current certificate expires.
If your certificate has expired, AFAS has a discretionary 28 day period following the certificate expiry date in which the course can be attended – this is not guaranteed and you are encouraged to book your training before your certificate expires.
The H&S department will contact you 90 days prior to your certificate expiry date.
This course is open to all School and Directorate Safety Coordinators, and to others who may find it useful

The course lasts 3 days, either consecutively or split over three weeks and includes topics such as:

Assessing and controlling risks
Investigating incidents
Understanding responsibilities
The course assessments consists of a multi-format exam on the last day and the completion of a risk assessment project within 2 weeks of the course finishing.
IOSH is Europe's leading professional body for health and safety practitioners. Their Managing Safely course is a very practical course which:
Establishes an understanding of the causes of accidents and ill health in the workplace
Explains the principles involved in the successful management of health and safety
Provides a practical understanding of current health and safety legislation
Highlights the practical measures and techniques needed to manage health and safety effectively on a day to day basis
How to book
The course leads to a nationally recognised certificate for those who successfully complete the course and the assessments. The course will be delivered at the University by the Health and Safety team, who are licensed by IOSH to deliver the course.

Training is for nominated staff who work in a building with evacuation chairs sited in Temporary Waiting Spaces. The training provides full understanding of how to operate an evacuation chair.

This training is offered to nominated staff who normally work in a building with an evacuation lift. It is aimed at providing lift operators with a full understanding of how to take control and operate an evacuation lift. The training offers participants the opportunity to operate the lift with the fire alarm in fire mode, although silenced.

This training is done in person for buildings that have Temporary Waiting Spaces (also known as refuges) for physically impaired persons. These are the ones with communication systems fitted.
What does the training cover?
This system allows a person in need of assistance with evacuation to summon help. There are green boxes in the Temporary Waiting Spaces that communicate directly with a panel and phone located at the fire panel.

A short one-hour session using a scenario based around one or more than one key business continuity scenarios which might impact your team:
staff shortage (e.g. winter weather)
loss of building office or teaching/research space
loss of utilities (power, water heating / cooling, ventilation)
loss of IT or data
loss of suppliers or services/equipment failure
Other key areas of risk
The session aims to improve operational resilience to build confidence and capability of staff who have a role in responding to a planned/unplanned incident or emergency and would be tasked with managing the response, recovery and resumption of key activities within their School/Directorate.
The output will be a team that is better prepared, familiar with their Plan and a Plan that is ready to activate.
