The University's Data and Power BI Journey

The University's Data and Power BI Journey

An update on the University's Data and Power BI Journey

The University started its data and business intelligence journey in 2019 when an institutional commitment was made to foster a data culture and data-informed decision-making within the University, and make access to data easier for the whole staff community. Three distinctive phases of the Data and BI Programme have now been completed with various dashboards developed providing extensive reporting on student, research and staff data.

The Data and BI Coordination Group, led by the Directorate of Planning & Governance, is responsible for the governance framework around Power BI, the University’s visualisation tool. The University Data Protection Officer is a member of the Group, and all dashboards must comply with data protection regulations.

New Power BI dashboards made available to staff

The University BI Portal is continuously expanding with new Power BI dashboards added offering an overview of the University’s performance in various areas.

Dashboards added in the last few months include:

  • Three dashboards developed as part of Phase 2 of the University’s Data and BI Programme:
    • Research Applications & Awards
    • Research Income
    • Research Staff
  • New dashboards relating to education data:
    • University Graduate Outcomes results
    • Degree classifications
    • The National Student Survey
  • Student Admissions
  • A new dashboard relating to environmental sustainability data
  • Phase 3 of the Data and BI Programme has just concluded and a dashboard on the staff population will be published shortly.

Who can access Power BI Dashboards?

All staff with University IT accounts and equipment can access Power BI dashboards in the Portal. Most of our dashboards are open to all staff but a few will have restricted access. If you have any queries, please contact the Data and BI Coordination Group via databihub@abdn.ac.uk.

Please note that in order to be granted access to a shared Power BI dashboard it is required that you successfully complete the mandatory Data Protection Awareness Training provided by Meta Compliance. The Data & BI Coordination Group will check your status with regard to this training with the Information Governance Team.
