We are sad to report the passing of Emeritus Professor John David Maitland Wright FRSE, who died on 7 August at the age of 81. John was a distinguished mathematician with over 130 publications. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1978. He was appointed to a Sixth Century Chair at the University of Aberdeen in 2004 and continued to do research actively until well after his retirement in 2015. John served as Deputy Director of the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge from 1994 to 1996 and was Treasurer of the London Mathematical Society from 1986 to 1994.
Son of Sir Edward Wright - former Professor of Mathematics and Principal of the University of Aberdeen from 1962 to 1976 - John was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen before gaining a DPhil at Oxford. He was subsequently a Senior Associate Research Fellow of Christ Church, Oxford and professor at the University of Reading.
There will be a service held for John on 14 September at Christ Church.
