New nursery wins local design award

The University's new Rocking Horse Nursery building won an award at the recent Aberdeen Society of Architects (ASA) Design Awards 2016.

Designed by BMJ Architects as a Passive House building, it won in the ‘Public / Health / Education / Leisure’ section.

This year’s awards saw 28 entrants across five categories.  The ASA is the local chapter of the RIAS (Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland) and alongside the other winners, the Nursery project will now be submitted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.

The ASA’s awards celebrate the best of recent architecture in the North-East of Scotland, with the panel judges looking for projects which show innovation and design excellence, irrespective of size, type and whether new or adapted.

Key consideration in the judging is given to design aesthetics, effectiveness of function, detailing and sustainability.

Professor Wolfgang Feist of the University of Innsbruck and the Passive House Institute, will give a talk during May Festival about sustainable buildings and Passive House.  Full details will appear in the May Festival brochure but his talk will take place in KCCC at 3.00pm on Friday, 27 May.
