New Student Communications & Welcome Week

Dear colleague

In preparation for the University's January intake, we are preparing our new student communications which I would encourage Schools to contribute to. These communications guide students through the registration process, and provide information on academic inductions and a brief welcome message from Schools.

Members of the Welcome Week Planning Group have already been contacted about providing this information, which is required by 17 December 2024.

These emails are issued through timed automations based on the date a student has cleared.

You’ll find more details of the topics covered in these emails and the approximate send dates on the New Students Staff Resource Centre.

New student website

Students are directed to the New Students website in all new student emails for more information about School processes, induction, reading lists and support services.

Please review your respective sections of the website and provide updates by emailing studentlife@abdn.ac.uk no later than Tuesday 17 December 2024

School induction

School inductions are a valuable opportunity to provide an overview of how your School operates and share details of any course specific inductions that students are expected to attend.

To support these sessions, PowerPoint templates have been created with details of content you may wish to include.

Orientation

New students are required to complete the University’s online orientation. This is a mandatory course that students must complete in the first 4 weeks of their studies.

Topics covered in orientation include: University structure; the common grading scale; monitoring and engagement; communication, EDI, Health & Safety, and much more.

Information on what’s covered in Orientation can be found on the New Student Welcome – Staff Resource Centre.

Welcome Week

Welcome Week will take place from 20 - 24 January 2025, with activities and events hosted by the Experience, Engagement & Wellbeing Team and the Students' Union.

Activities will give students the opportunity to learn more about life at the University of Aberdeen and our support services. There will also be campus tours in Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill to help students familiarise themselves with our campuses.

Information on all the events taking place in January, and throughout the year can be found on the Student Events pages.

I hope you have found this a helpful overview of our planned Welcome Week activities and communications. If you’d like more information, please email studentlife@abdn.ac.uk.

Best wishes,

Duncan Stuart
Assistant Director of People and Head of Experience, Engagement & Wellbeing
