Update on Storm Babet

Dear colleague,

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for wind and rain from tomorrow and into the weekend, including a red warning for rain affecting Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Angus.

Storm Babet is expected to bring exceptional rainfall which will cause severe flooding and potential risk to life and property, as well as travel and power disruption.

The red warning runs from 18:00 on Thursday until noon on Friday. Amber and yellow warnings for rain and wind are in place across most of Scotland and other parts of the UK. On Friday morning, the warning extends down the east of England to the south coast.

People are advised to take appropriate precautions based on advice from Transport Scotland, our own Winter Preparedness website and Ready Scotland, along with other local sources including councils, Police Scotland, Traffic Scotland and Scotrail which will provide updates via social media.

ScotRail has said customers should check for updates on services before travelling. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also issued a number of flood alerts for the region.

Your safety is the priority. Please liaise with you line manager to discuss working from home if appropriate.

Staff are also reminded that we have facilities that may be useful to you if you are impacted.

If you have any queries over what is available and where, please contact estates@abdn.ac.uk

Please note the Cruickshank Botanic Garden will close from tonight until Monday morning which means you won’t be able to walk through the gardens between Zoology and Cruickshank buildings and will instead need to take the public footpaths on the outside of the gardens. The University’s Zoology Museum will also be closed from tonight until Monday.

Best wishes and stay safe
