Guardian University Guide 2024

Dear Colleagues,

The Guardian University Guide was published on Saturday and I am pleased to report that the University has achieved its highest ever position in this ranking, placing 12th in the UK. The University’s rise has also improved its position in Scotland, rising from 4th to 2th in Scotland.

This is an outstanding result for the University and represents a rise of 39 places since the 2019 edition.

The University has also been ranked first in the UK for Medicine, with a further nine subject areas ranking in the UK’s top ten:

Anthropology and Archaeology 4th

Physics 6th

Accounting and Finance 7th

International Relations 7th

Philosophy 7th

Pharmacy and Pharmacology 8th

Politics 9th

Sports Science 9th

Chemical Engineering 10th

A further nine subjects are ranked in the top 20, so that more than two thirds of our subjects that feature in this ranking are in the top 20 in the UK.

In terms of individual metrics at University level, the University remains top in the UK on the ‘Value Added’ measure which compares students’ degree results with their entry qualifications to show how effectively they are taught. As the Guardian has used the 2022 National Student Survey results, we are again 4th in the UK for the ‘Satisfied with Teaching’ metric. The University also remains 9th in the UK for ‘Average Entry Tariff’ which looks at UCAS scores of entrants.

The Guardian University Guide, unlike other national league tables, focuses exclusively on teaching and student-facing metrics, with the overall ranking built up from the subject level rankings. A full report on the Guardian University Guide 2024 is available on the Directorate of Planning & Governance webpages

Further ranking results are expected this month, with The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 due to be published on 15 September, followed by the new QS Europe University Rankings on 20 September, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings on 27September. We will disseminate the results to the community as usual. But meanwhile, congratulations to Medicine and to the whole University community on these outstanding results.

Best wishes

Karl
