New monthly breakfast event for entrepreneurs

Staff, students and alumni attended the first ‘Start Here Breakfast’ event at the University’s ABVenure Zone last week.

‘Start Here Breakfast’ is a new event which will take place every month, giving entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet up and share their experiences and ideas with like-minded individuals.

On hand to welcome and chat to attendees were two of the University's Entrepreneurs in Residence, Steve Aitken and Paddy Collins, Enterprise Executive Ijeoma Obiagwu and Dean for Enterprise and Innovation, Dr Heather Morgan, as well as Codebase tech startup support reps, and local business owners.

Dr Heather Morgan commented: “We were delighted to host our first Start Here Breakfast event last week.

“This is a really exciting project to be driving forward and it was fantastic to see so many people come along to share their experiences and ideas of setting up a business.

“We hope these monthly breakfasts will offer guidance around the best ways to commercialise research or ideas, tailored for each individual or team, and you can learn from others or create a new team to solve a problem or identify an idea. The main goal of the events is that we nurture our community of innovation and commercialisation to support and grow our start-ups and spin outs. Remember, you don’t necessarily need an idea – sometimes that comes later – joining us is the first step! Start Here!”

The monthly events are free and operate on a drop-in basis within ABVenture Zone on 8th floor of MacRobert Building. Refreshments are provided and this month they were kindly sponsored by Codebase.

Events will take place on the second Thursday of every month, with the next one happening on August 10 from 8am - 10am.

Start Here Breakfast events are open to all University staff, current students and recent graduates within last two years. Dr Morgan said: “We’re also extending our invitation to people in the region who want to join us!”
