Information on becoming a Trustee of the Rocking Horse Nursery

The Rocking Horse Nursery caters for children from early weeks to school age and has been running for over 30 years. It moved into a new, purpose designed and Passiv Haus building in Old Aberdeen in 2015.

The nursery is professionally managed and is governed by a Board of Trustees as a not-for-profit organisation. It has recently been registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). All places are taken by children of students or staff of the University, with the benefit of cost reductions for staff parents from a salary sacrifice scheme and by university-term contracts and differentially lower fees for student parents.

The Trust is looking to recruit two new Trustees to participate in its oversight and strategic direction.

Trustees will ideally:
• Have an interest in the provision of childcare and/or delivery of work/life balance issues across the University community. However, Trustees should not presently have children using the nursery’s facilities.
• Be prepared to review, discuss, and from time to time decide on issues of recruitment, training, salary levels, fees and other operational matters in the nursery.
• Be prepared to consider expert reports on the nursery and develop appropriate plans and strategy for the future provision of childcare services across the University.

The Trust meets at least four times per year and extraordinarily if required. Trustees take collective responsibility for the operations of the nursery, with suitable insurance and indemnities and with the aid of professional management and the input from relevant University advice in HR, financial and estates matters.

If you are interested in becoming a Trustee, please get in touch with the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr Gerry Hough at g.hough@abdn.ac.uk by 12 May.
