Keith Campbell's top tips for working from home

Face to face interaction with his team is key for Head of Security and Portering Keith Campbell...

This has become unachievable since I have been working from home. With many of my team still working on campus it is important that I continue to understand their issues and have perspective at an operational level. Communicating regularly with staff by mobile phone, has become key for me.

Work/Wife balance - Never before have I spent so much time with my wife, and as she stands over my shoulder, I have nothing but praise for the immense and continuing support she’s giving to her new work colleague I’m sure others would like to share similar praise to their loved ones!

Rear window - Like the Hitchcock film, my new office provides a view to my rear garden.  I never knew there was so much going on, my highlight every morning is watching two Robins building a nest in one of my shrubs - they’re so busy!

Importance of humour - At a time where there’s not a lot of good news, it’s important to maintain a sense of humour. This may include things like getting as many titles of Queen songs into your daily departmental or school meeting (sorry Angus…..I don’t think you’ve noticed, but ‘The Show Must Go On’).

We’re not all home working - Please don’t forget that a number of staff are still on campus carrying out key and business critical duties. When I do my Thursday night 8pm clap for carers I not only proudly applaud my neighbour who is a nurse, but also think of the University staff who are on site daily, placing themselves at increased risk, so join me next time in applauding those Cleaners, Porters, Security Officers, Electricians, Engineers and the Residence team at Hillhead, who I’m so very proud of!
