Success for female technicians

Congratulations to Lauren Riddell and Bernice McDonald who have both successfully completed their training as technicians in the School of Engineering.

Lauren and Bernice both joined the School of Engineering in 2014 shortly after leaving school as trainee technicians - Lauren in Mechanical Engineering and Bernice in Electronic Engineering. Now, after four years undertaking Modern Apprenticeship programmes, both women are fully qualified technicians providing valuable support to the teaching and research activities of the School.

A celebratory presentation was held in September, which saw Head of School Prof Igor Guz present Lauren and Bernice with a certificate of recognition for completing their training.

Eddie Stephen, Technical Resources Manager, commented: “It’s still relatively uncommon for women to begin working in the disciplines of electronic and mechanical engineering at technician level. Bernice and Lauren exemplify the career opportunities for women in the engineering trades, and we’re extremely proud of their successes.”
