Volunteers are being sought to donate stool in the Human Nutrition Unit at the Rowett Institute as part of a programme being organised by Aberdeen-based biotechnology company EnteroBiotix, which was started by a University of Aberdeen student.
Donors play a pivotal role in supporting EnteroBiotix develop a potentially life-saving medicinal product for use in Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (also known as 'FMT' or a stool transplant).
FMT involves the transfer of healthy microbial communities from a donor into a patient suffering from a disease or infection associated with imbalances of bacteria in the gut.
Clinical trials have shown that FMT cures around 90% of patients suffering from a debilitating infection of the gut caused by a bacterium called C.difficile and potentially has applicability in other conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis.
EnteroBiotix, started by University of Aberdeen graduate James McIlroy, intends on supplying products to NHS hospitals for patient use in the first half of 2018 and only one more donor is required at the present time to allow the Company to complete its initial product development.
The donor screening process is straightforward and will involve completing a health questionnaire, an interview and blood and stool testing. Exclusion criteria are similar to those for donating blood. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in taking part. We will cover expenses incurred in donating.
