May Fest '19 Underway!

The University of Aberdeen will welcome thousands of visitors this weekend to the seventh annual May Festival.

May Fest ‘19 gets underway this morning (Friday) and has a huge variety of events on offer at the Old Aberdeen campus, as well as at various locations across the city.

More than 150 events will take place encompassing a wide variety of themes including Word; Culture, History and Heritage; Music; Science, Health and wellbeing and Environment.

Film director and former University of Aberdeen student, Jon S Baird, who has directed hits such as Filth and the Bafta nominated Stan and Ollie, returns to campus tonight to deliver a special edition of the Director’s Cut series where he will discuss his career and how growing up in the north-east inspired him.

As well as a jam-packed main programme, the festival will have a dedicated Childrens’ programme running over Saturday and Sunday, with lots on offer to keep younger festival goers amused!

On Saturday the Local Food and Makers Market will take place in Elphinstone Hall, where a range of Etsy makers, local artists, designers and craftspeople alongside local food and drink producers will present their products.

On Sunday, the same venue will host ‘Hall of Mayhem’ – which is back by popular demand and features lots of fun and interactive stalls for all the family to enjoy.

Professor Karl Leydecker, Senior Vice-Principal at the University, said: “I am delighted to be welcoming people from the city and beyond to the University of Aberdeen May Festival and I am sure everyone who comes along will enjoy their visit immensely. The 2019 programme is excellent and extremely varied meaning there really is something on offer for everyone.

“The May Festival is a key event in the region’s cultural calendar and I am extremely proud that the University is able to put on a festival of this scale. Of course, it would not be possible without the generous support of our partners and sponsors, and all the members of University staff who work tirelessly to organise this fantastic event.”

Tickets for the May Festival can be purchased online by visiting www.abdn.ac.uk/mayfestival. Anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet can visit the May Festival Information Point in King’s Conference Centre where staff will be on hand to help. The Information Point will be staffed from 9.30am – 8pm on Friday, and 9.30am – 7.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
