Government Minister to speak at University Climate Change event

The Minister for Rural Affairs and Natural Environment, Mairi Gougeon MSP, will speak at a climate change event at the University of Aberdeen this week (Thursday, March 21).

The Climate Change Perspectives seminar series is organised by Professor Adam Price from the University’s School of Biological Sciences and is part of Climate Week North East, and members of the public are invited to hear from experts about what climate change means to them.

The MSP for Angus North and Mearns, who is also an alumnus of the University, will discuss the Scottish Government’s action on climate change.

Attendees will also hear from Professor David Lusseau, who will talk about the UN development goals related to research in climate change resilience; Lina Nass, Communities Officer at Aberdeen University Students’ Association who will speak about the relationship between capitalism and climate change; Dr Stephen Whybrow will talk about the more sustainable sources of protein in our diet; and Professor Seonaidh McDonald from the Robert Gordon University will talk about societal behaviour and barriers to change for climate mitigation.

Dr Price will then chair an audience Q&A with the panel, he said: “The Climate Change Perspectives seminar series has now been running since 2017 with the aim of getting experts from the University presenting to audiences about what climate change means to them in their work or campus life. It’s marvellous that we can coordinate with Climate Week North East which is organising over 50 events across Aberdeen and the Shire”.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mairi back to the University and are looking forward to hearing her talk about the current plans the Scottish Government have on climate change action.”

Minister for Rural Affairs and Natural Environment, Mairi Gougeon said: “I’m delighted to be returning to the University of Aberdeen and to be taking part in Climate Week North East. Scotland is a world leader in tackling climate change and this event is an excellent opportunity to showcase the benefits of the transition to a carbon neutral society.”

Climate Change Perspectives will take place at King’s Conference Centre at 7pm on Thursday, March 21.

The event is free to attend.
