The Aberdeen Centre for Women’s Health Research are hosting a virtual seminar event via MS Teams on Tuesday the 15th of March between 5.30pm- 7.30pm. The event is to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Centre and to mark International Women’s Day 2022 in collaboration with the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

We are delighted to confirm our guest speakers as Dr Ranee Thakar, Senior Vice Principal of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Professor Helen Weiss, Professor of Epidemiology & Director of MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group.

Miss Ranee Thakar is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology at Croydon University Hospital as well as being a Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George's University of London. She is the Urogynaecology Lead and has previously served as the Clinical Business Unit Lead in her trust. She is the current Vice President for Global Health and the co-chair of the RCOG Race Equality Taskforce.

She is passionate about research and recognises its vital role in advancing health. Her publications include many original papers in peer reviewed journals and chapters in books. She has edited three textbooks. Having previously focused on the diagnosis and repair of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASI) through research and training, she is currently leading on a joint Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Royal College of Midwifery national prevention project funded by the Health Foundation, which has demonstrated a significant reduction in OASI rates.

She has a lifelong commitment to the improvement of women’s health globally and intends to pursue new initiatives in global health in her capacity as the Vice President of the RCOG. Ranee’s priorities include implementing strategies to ensure that the RCOG members and fellows across the world, feel engaged and empowered.

Helen is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the MRC International Statistical and Epidemiology Group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. A statistician by training, Helen has designed and analysed key epidemiological studies and clinical trials in low- and middle-income countries for 25 years. A main focus of her work has been evaluating intervention strategies to prevent and control HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, and to improve treatment of common mental disorders through task-shifting of counselling interventions by trained lay-workers in India and sub-Saharan Africa.

The adolescent period is crucial for both HIV and mental health in later life, and Helen now focuses her research on evaluating interventions among adolescents. Current work includes leading a school-based cluster randomised controlled trial of a menstrual health package intervention, to improve education, health and well-being among school girls in Uganda (the MENISCUS trial). Helen’s vision is to continue to expand school-based health interventions to broaden from single-disease interventions to address the broader prevention strategies needed to improve the health and wellbeing of adolescents globally.
