Join Dr Joshua Wright, Lecturer in Archaeology, as we explore the archaeology of the Far Eastern Silk Roads.
The Silk Road is the name given to the vast interior of Eurasia over a span of more than 1000 years. At its core, it is an economic system in which small nations magnified their economic power as intermediaries in a world-spanning trade system. It is impossible to detail even a fraction of its diversity, but also a single object here can invoke the entire world.
During this event, Dr Wright will look at the middle ages, particularly the time of the Tang and Byzantine Empires. His focus will be on recent archaeology of the Turkic Khaganates of Central Mongolia as well as Sogdia and Merv in present-day Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. This is a story of exuberant cosmopolitanism, shared aesthetics, local interpretations of global symbols, and backwoods conservatism. The Eurasian Silk Road was both every bit as dusty and dramatic as you think and also unlike what you expect!
