How can virtual and augmented reality (VR & AR) be used within oil and gas for education and improved decision-making skills? Flora and Laura from the University of Aberdeen (UOA) will join this Tech20 to discuss how virtual and augmented reality (VR & AR) tools are changing the face of medical training, and how the best practice from using this technology can be transferred to other industries, such as oil and gas. Flora will provide insight into a new VR training tool, which has been developed by the UOA, that exposes medical students to 360° images of hospital wards (incl. patients) and tests the users observational and decision-making skills. This tool has the potential to be used for the training of other professionals who work in high-risk and high-stakes work environments – a perfect example being an oil and gas platform or confined space entry. As well as the new VR programme, Laura will talk about how novel AR headsets such as Microsoft HoloLens® can be used to help surgeons transfer image data produced during the planning of the surgery (e.g. the exact location of tumours) by overlaying patient-specific 3D models onto the patient’s body surface. A general overview of the current state-of-the-art technology in this field that is market ready will be discussed to show that these practices can be used right away in a variety of industries to improve decision making.
