The University of Aberdeen's former Senior-Vice Principal, a Supreme Court judge and the former Dean of Guild of the City of Aberdeen are among those being honoured at the University's Graduation ceremonies this week.
The Hon Lady Wise will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University on Monday (June 15). Lady Morag graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1985. Having distinguished herself in practice in the Supreme Courts, she attained the rank of Queen’s Counsel in 2005. From 2008 she sat as a temporary judge in the Court of Session and in February 2013, Lady Wise was welcomed to the Bench at a ceremony at the Court of Session. She is widely acknowledged as a leading specialist in family and matrimonial matters and the Chambers UK Guide stated that there is ‘near universal acclaim that Morag Wise without doubt the very top advocate in her field.
At the same ceremony, Air Commodore Robert W Joseph CBE will collect a Masters of the University (MUniv).
Air Commodore Joseph retired from the RAF in January 2004 after 31 years distinguished service. Latterly, he was Assistant Chief of Staff (Air) within the NATO Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Atlantic Area Regional HQ in Northwood. He was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2000 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
The University will present Frances Guy, Head of Middle East Region at Christian Aid and former Representative for UN Women in Iraq, with a Doctor of Laws on Tuesday.
Ms Guy was Representative for UN Women in Iraq from May 2012 until December 2014. Prior to this, until 2012, she had a distinguished career as a member of the British Diplomatic Service.
She served as British Ambassador to the Republic of Lebanon from 2006 to 2011, a period of political turmoil and crisis. She has been President of the British Society for Middle East Studies since November 2013.
The University will also welcome Fred Dalgarno to campus on Tuesday to receive a Masters of the University (MUniv) degree.
Fred Dalgarno is a former the Dean of Guild of the city of Aberdeen and a lawyer and accountant by trade. He is a past president of Junior Chamber Aberdeen and Junior Chamber Aberdeen and Junior Chamber Scotland, former Chairman of the IOD Scotland Aberdeen branch and of the Royal Northern and University Club, and a past President of the Gordonian Association. Mr Dalgarno was Deputy Chairman of Medical Research Scotland, the independent Scottish medical research charity, until 2011. In 2010 he became Chairman of Sport Aberdeen, which delivers sport and physical activity on behalf of Aberdeen City Council.
On Friday, former Senior Vice-Principal Professor Stephen Logan will return to the graduation stage but this time he will be presented with a Doctor of Laws (LLD).
Professor Logan, who is Chair of NHS Grampian, retired from the University of Aberdeen where he held various positions since 1994, in January. He was appointed to be the first Professor of Neuroscience at the University in 1994, subsequently becoming Dean of the Medical School, Vice-Principal and, from August 2004, Senior Vice-Principal of the University.
