University to mark Lunar New Year with fun-filled events

The University of Aberdeen Confucius Institute will celebrate Lunar New Year this month with two exciting events showcasing Chinese culture and traditions.

The Confucius Institute will kick off the Year of the Dragon on Sunday (February 18) with its Spring Festival Family Fun Day. Members of the public are invited to try calligraphy sessions, craft your own dragon mask or paper puppet, and take part in traditional games.

The pop-up Noodle Shack café will be serving delicious noodles for lunch while local storyteller, Pauline Cordiner, shares tales of dragons.

A costume bank and photo booth will also feature at the free event, which takes place at Elphinstone Hall from 10am to 4pm.

On February 24 and 25, the Spring Gala Show will take place at the Tivoli Theatre in Aberdeen, promising a celebration of Chinese culture.

The audience will be treated to spellbinding routines by RedPhoenix Dance, traditional musical performances and a showcase by Yee’s Hung Ga Kung Fu.

Tickets cost £9, or £4.50 for concessions.

Professor Michelle Macleod, Director of the University of Aberdeen's Confucius Institute, said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year with the local community and can’t wait to kick off the Year of the Dragon.

“We’re excited to welcome the public to our family fun day at the Old Aberdeen campus and showcase the talent of our spectacular performers at the Tivoli Theatre.

“As well as being a celebration of Lunar New Year, our events present the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture, language and traditions. I’d encourage everyone to come along and enjoy a vibrant and authentic Chinese New Year experience.”

The Confucius Institute at the University of Aberdeen, established in 2013, provides Chinese language teaching and culture classes and cultural events to the north-east Scotland community.
