EXPLORATHON returns to showcase the best in research

Aberdeen will share in an exciting programme of events showcasing the best of Scottish research to the public.

The annual EXPLORATHON programme, coordinated by the University of Aberdeen, will run throughout September with family activities, talks and presentations, online tours and debates.

EXPLORATHON is the Scottish celebration of European Researchers’ Night, Europe’s largest public engagement with research event, which showcases the cutting-edge research being conducted in universities through a range of exciting and interactive formats for people of all ages and interests.
For 2021, virtual visitors can take a tour of some of the University’s important research buildings, including the Institute of Medical Sciences and the Shellfish Laboratory and Aquarium at the School of Biological Sciences.

At Aberdeen Science Centre, University researchers will hold two ‘take-over’ days on Saturday September 18 and Saturday September 25 allowing visitors of all ages to get hands on in a range of experiments and family activities.

The contribution of Aberdeen researchers to 100 years of insulin will be celebrated in a series of schools workshops while quick fire PechaKucha talks will look at the various roles the arts, science and engineering play in our lives.

This year, EXPLORATHON will also incorporate a range of WayWord events – the University’s celebration of arts, culture, music and much more, with a writing workshop with Zakiya McKenzie and an exploration of writing and nature with authors Alice Tarbuck and Jessica J. Lee.

Aberdeen audiences can connect with a Scottish researcher at the Scottish Research Showcase on Twitter on September 17 and the Global Science Show featuring science communicators from around the world on Saturday September 25

Rachel Elliott from the University of Aberdeen, coordinator of the Aberdeen EXPLORATHON events, said: “EXPLORATHON has grown from the concept of a European Researchers’ Night to a wide programme of events celebrating the best of research in Scotland and beyond.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of research and the contribution it makes to all our lives. EXPLORATHON showcases the cutting-edge research being conducted in universities through a range of exciting and interactive formats for people of all ages and interests.

“We hope people will join us in learning more about exciting developments happening in their own region and across Europe through our exciting programme of events.”
