Global rise for Divinity in QS World Rankings by Subject

Divinity at the University of Aberdeen has risen up the QS World University Rankings by Subject and is now placed at 25th in the world.

The discipline (categorised as Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies by QS) has climbed nine places from 34th last year and is the highest ranked of all Aberdeen subject areas.

The rankings, released this week, cover 48 subjects divided between five broad subject areas.

The University has risen in four of the five broad subject areas: Arts & Humanities, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.  The fifth broad subject area, Engineering & Technology, suffered a slight decline by four places

In the individual subject areas, Archaeology, Agriculture and Anthropology also made it into the top 100 globally.

At a UK level, the University has three subjects within the national Top 10: Agriculture (4th), Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies (7th), and Anthropology (10th).

A further five subjects within the UK Top 20 with Archaeology at 13th, Earth and Marine Sciences and Environmental Sciences both in 14th place, Chemical Engineering 19th and Pharmacy and Pharmacology ranked 20th. A total of 15 subjects are inside the UK Top 30.

Professor Tom Greggs, Head of Divinity at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The University of Aberdeen has a tradition of teaching Divinity which dates back more than five centuries.

“To be ranked as 25th in the world in the year that the University celebrates the 525th anniversary of its foundation is particularly fitting.

“Today, Divinity at Aberdeen combines the best of an ancient university with the best of contemporary, cutting edge research and teaching and our success in the QS World University Rankings by Subject reflects this.

“We are a department which is classical, forward thinking and genuinely world-leading.”
