The University of Aberdeen Law School will once again open its doors to students from the USA as part of its Baltimore/Maryland Summer School.
The Summer School is a long-standing tradition between the institutions - the programme was initiated in 1987 by Baltimore and Aberdeen Universities, with Maryland University joining a few years later.
19 students will attend the four-week Summer School, which will see them study Comparative Torts Law in Context and Comparative Property and Contract Law in Times of Extraordinary Change.
Other highlights of the programme include the bi-annual Lord Rodger Lecture Series, which will be delivered by Lord Pentland, and is entitled: ‘A wicked murder mystery: Lord Rodger and the mens rea of murder.’
For more than 20 years, Lord Rodger visited the University to deliver an annual lecture to the Baltimore and Maryland students at the invitation of the late Professor David Carey Miller, formerly Head of the Law School.
The event will also mark the launch of the David Carey Miller Scholarship and a book in his memory ‘Northern Lights: Essay in Private Law in Memory of Professor David Carey Miller’.
As well as studying, the group will also enjoy various trips, including the opportunity to spend a day in Edinburgh, attending the Superior and Criminal Courts, followed by a visit to the Scottish Parliament.
Anne-Michelle Slater from the School of Law and co-director of the Summer School, commented: “We are all looking forward to welcoming the students from Baltimore and Maryland to our annual Summer School. The programme they will be following is a fantastic balance of classroom learning and field trips and I am sure they will all enjoy the four weeks they spend with us here in Aberdeen.”
Dr Susan Stokeld added: “The Lord Roger Lecture is a particular highlight in the programme and we are delighted to be welcoming Lord Pentland to King’s College to deliver this year’s lecture.”
