As part of the Elphinstone Institute Public Lecture Series. Anna Vermehren, the Director of Timespan will offer an insight into their organisation.
Established in 1986, Timespan developed from a small local heritage centre to an award-winning cultural hub offering artist residencies, changing exhibitions in the only public contemporary art gallery in Sutherland, a museum experience that includes a virtual world application and much more.
They have over 100 events and activities annually for a core visiting audience of around 12,000 every year and are located in one of the remotest areas of Europe.
They attract people locally, nationally and internationally to build partnerships and collaborate with researchers, artists, audiences and participants of all ages and backgrounds.
In this talk, Anna Vermehren will speak about their organisational structure, and the methods that they apply to preserve, sustain, celebrate and amplify the culture of their place.
With a background in visual arts facilitation, curation and management, Anna Vermehren, Director of Timespan, has realised a significant shift in Timespan’s programming focusing on the concept of North. Prior to joining Timespan in May 2012, Anna worked as Project Manager at Deveron Arts in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, where she spearheaded socially engaged arts projects with Scottish and international artists such as Jacqueline Donachie, Hamish Fulton, Anthony Schrag, Roman Signer, Ross Sinclair and The Utopia Group among others. Anna holds degrees in Art History, Sociology and Literature. She has publishedarticles in scholarly journals including Cambridge Anthropology and established the Art Reader Network, a collaborative open learning platform in 2010.
