The Northern Arc Sessions Pre-show Event in the Music Hall Cafe will be given by Dr Lisa Collinson of the Pathways to Power Programme (Snow for the Crown). Also Hilde Margrethe Nielsen from Hardanger, Norway will present Norwegian poet (Olav Hauge). Starts 6.45pm.
Dr Lisa Collinson of the Centre for Scandinavian Studies (University of Aberdeen) will share some of the disturbing and beautiful imagery of Norway’s medieval law books, and explain how her work on these is contributing to the University’s exciting new North Research Theme.
Hilde Margrethe Nielsen comes from Hardanger, Norway and has a background in art and music. She started her MA in History and Music at University of Aberdeen in 2007 which was concluded in 2011 and went on to do a Master of Letters in Viking Studies which she completed in 2012. Hilde’s PhD project looks at music and musical instruments in pre-Christian Scandinavian societies by researching both archaeological and literary evidence from an archaeomusicological perspective. Hilde will present Olav Hauge - a Norwegian poet working, his whole life, as a gardener in his own orchard.

Karine Polwart with Sigrid Moldestad
These two performers signify what the Northern Arc Sessions are all about – a loving respect for the folk traditions of their respective nations, but with a newness and dynamism which brings fresh contemporary relevance. Karine Polwart has been described as “one of the finest singer-songwriters in Britain” known for her talent for creating unique and enduring melodies for her achingly pure vocal ability. Sigrid was Norwegian Folk Musician of the Year in 2010 and her songs, fiddle tunes and storytelling are full of humour and beauty.

Karine tours most often as a trio with her brother Steven Polwart (acoustic and electric guitars, ukulele & vocals) and singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Inge Thomson (accordion, percussion, loops & vocals).
Karin Polwart about her quest Sigrid Mldestad:
‘Sigrid Moldestad is a beautiful singer and fiddler. She's around the same age as me and seems to occupy a similar place on the Norwegian music scene as I do here at home in Scotland, combining contemporary and original elements with traditional influences also. What sparked me to collaborate with her for this one-off Aberdeen show is her recordings of Robert Burns songs translated into Norwegian by Johannes Gjerdåker. Apart from the happy and convenient fact that we seem to sing in all the same keys, this shared Burns repertoire in Norwegian, Scots and English just seems a gift opportunity to make something sympathetic and meaningful together. I'm looking forward to it.'
