The Departments of Archaeology and Geography and the Environment welcomed over 60 delegates for the Annual Society for Medieval Archaeology PG Colloquium at the University of Aberdeen between 7 and 9 November 2013.
Participants included undergraduate, postgraduate students, early career researchers and members of the public from throughout Europe, the UK and Ireland. The colloquium consisted of two days of oral presentations with 28 papers presented, a poster session and a one-day field trip, organised by a committee of postgraduate students.
The oral presentations reflected the wide range of interests with sessions covering diverse topics such as Trade and Networks, Methodological Studies, Landscape and Settlement, Belief and Worldviews, Craft and Technology and Society and Identity. Key note lectures were presented by Professor Neil Price Women with weapons: in search of the female Viking and Professor Stefan Brink Viking Society in Scandinavia from my perspective.
Prizes were awarded for best oral presentation to Sean Doherty of the University of Nottingham and the best poster to Barbora Wouters from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and University of Aberdeen.
The final day consisted of a field trip, funded by the University of Aberdeen’s North Theme, to visit a range of medieval sites in north-east Scotland including a tour of Drum Castle led by Jill Barber, Dunnottar Castle, Pictavia and a tour of the St Vigeans Church and Museum with Prof Jane Geddes.
Social activities organised for the participants included a conference dinner, wine reception, whisky tasting led by the University of Aberdeen Whisky Society and a traditional Scottish ceilidh with stovies.
Overall, the conference received very positive feedback, which reflects the importance of the colloquium as a platform for postgraduate students to share their interests and expertise.
