Dr Malcolm Harvey was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to conduct a teaching and research exchange at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, USA.
With a research background in constitutional politics and a teaching interest in US politics, Dr Harvey combined both during his spring semester at Villanova - guest lecturing across a number of courses on issues such a Brexit, Scottish nationalism and secession movements in Scotland and Catalonia, while observing classes on American political institutions and issues.
Despite the pandemic delaying the project for several months, Dr Harvey was also able to engage in local discussions surrounding the aftermath of the 6 January attack on the US Capitol, the second impeachment trial of President Trump and the inauguration of his successor, President Joe Biden.
In addition to the knowledge exchange activities that occurred during the period of scholarship, it is anticipated that virtual exchange activities will be a longer-term outcome from the project.
