Chris Martin has been awarded a student travel grant from the Canada-UK Foundation for £1,000 in order to participate in the closing events of ‘Fabric of our Lands’; an exhibition of Salish woven blankets from museums in America and Europe. The Vancouver exhibition marks the first time many of the blankets have returned to Canada in over 150 years, and it is the first time the Perth blankets have been physically available to Salish weavers since they arrived in Scotland in 1833. Chris will be reconnecting with First Nations groups to understand how the blankets are understood and significant historically and in the present day. The grant is awarded twice per year, and is targeted at Doctoral Students and Academic Staff for projects relating to the continuing relationships between Canada and the UK.
