Dr Isabella Kasselstrand will open this year's Sociology Seminar Series with her paper, entitled 'Scottish Secularisation in a Global Context', to be held jointly online and on campus on November 3.
In the paper, Dr Kasselstrand explores the contemporary debate on religious change and presents a fresh reading of Europe's position as an 'exceptional case' due to its low religious participation.
Drawing on data from the World Values Survey and the European Values Study, and interviews and data from the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, Dr Kasselstrand will demonstrate how Scottish secularisation fits into global patterns of religious decline, including trends in Chile, South Korea, and the United States.
Scotland, Chile, South Korea, and the United States are countries that are culturally, religiously, and geographically distinct, but they are rapidly modernising contexts with high or increasing levels of economic and human development
The paper is part of her forthcoming book with Professor Phil Zuckerman (Pitzer College) and Professor Ryan Cragun (University of Tampa), Beyond Doubt: The Secularization of Society, which is currently under contract with NYU Press.
The Sociology Seminar Series will be taking place online and in KCG7 in Kings College, on campus, between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m.. To obtain the link to attend online, please contact Dr Luisa Gandolfo.
