Neutral, but very political
The AUSA Politics and International Relations Society is one of the largest societies on campus with around 120 members and event attendance regularly in excess of this. Our aim is to provide an arena for people interested in Politics and International Relations to come together and explore their curiosities with like-minded people, whilst having lots of fun!
We hold academic and social events all through the year; highlights include our end of year ball and our annual trip. In recent years we have been to Amsterdam and The Hague, Vienna and Prague, New York City and Washington D.C, and Brussels. We also hold monthly socials where we head out for a few drinks after we have listened to one of our guest speakers. Other event highlights have included our US Election All Night Watch Party, Passport Pubcrawl, and prominent speakers such as Iranian Presidential Candidate Dr. Hooshang Amirahmadi and Dame Margaret Anstee, former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. We have an exciting year ahead of us, so keep your eyes peeled for new events!
The society won the coveted ‘Society of the Year Award’ in the academic years 2012-2013, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015 which is an unprecedented success as it is the first time any society has achieved this honour of winning in three consecutive years. We also won best event for 2013-2014 with The Legacy of Nelson Mandela, which was organised jointly with the African and Caribbean Society.
Our main purpose, however, is to provide a space were P&IR students can get together, make friends, have a few drinks and a good time. We have strong ties with the School of Social Science, and in particular, the Politics and International Relations Department – where we work with them to ensure you are getting the best education possible whilst they support the society in our endeavours.
