Jason Falkenburg has been awarded a graduate research fellowship to undertake his PhD as part of the "Housing Heritage: Exploring, theorising and problematising multiple kinds of heritage making" research group at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo in conjunction with the University of Oslo. Jason’s project will investigate Norwegian cultural heritage production by comparing responses to Viking archaeological materials, e.g., ships and sacred burial objects, displayed in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo with Yule altars. These altars are private collections of sacred objects associated with Nordic culture, physically displayed in museum-, and altar-like fashion, and ‘virtually’ shared in digital media. He is interested in the 'animistic' qualities people attribute to these material objects as well as in the cultural / religious relational experiences they have with them when they encounter such objects in museums and other ‘sacred’ display settings. Jason spent the academic year of 2014-2015 in Aberdeen studying for his MRes in Social Anthropology. We wish him all the best for his future studies.
