A student who graduated in PIR at the University of Aberdeen, Grace Lily Broad, has just published on the LSE blog. The article is based on her dissertation, and titled “The power of the photograph: The Independent’s framing of the ongoing Ukraine conflict”.
Grace Lily Broad is an MA Politics and International Relations graduate from the University of Aberdeen, currently studying towards a Masters in Modern and Contemporary Art (History, Curating, Criticism) at the University of Edinburgh. Interested in the dynamic intersection between art and the political, Grace hopes to combine these passions and continue her interdisciplinary research in documentary photography.
A few words from Dr Kathrin Thomas, the supervisor for her dissertation: Grace has delivered an impressive piece of research on a very difficult topic. She has approached a visual content analysis and borrowed from disciplines outside Politics and International Relations to successfully study war photography. She won the best dissertation prize for in International Relations for her excellent work in 2023-24. I am very happy, and also very proud, to see that she has turned her achievement into a publication on the LSE Blog. Many congratulations, Grace!
Excerpt:
"The communicative role of imagery is fundamental in the context of war. Although war photography is a core element of news coverage, the public often knows little about visual media framing and is, therefore, less aware of the power of the image. Grace Lily Broad uses photographs of the war in Ukraine to argue that photographs don’t simply capture a moment in time; they also relay visual messages, which can directly influence public opinion."
