Scholarship to take doctor to US to explore health system organisation

A University of Aberdeen medical graduate has secured a prestigious scholarship which will take him to the US to explore health system organisation and delivery.

Dr Adam Boggon (School of Medicine 2012-2015) has received a Fulbright All Disciplines Award to enable him to study at Harvard University on one of the most well-regarded and impactful scholarship programmes in the world.

He will undertake a one-year Master of Public Health in Health Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only bi-lateral, transatlantic scholarship programme, offering awards for study or research in any field, at any accredited US or UK university.

The Commission selects scholars through a rigorous application and interview process, looking for academic excellence alongside a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright mission and a plan to give back to the UK upon returning.

Commenting on receiving the Fulbright scholarship, Dr Boggon said:

“I spent time as a medical student in Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda and know how rich an experience it is to learn within another culture. It's exciting and humbling to have this chance. I believe decisive, collaborative clinician leadership is integral to the future of the NHS and the morale of its workforce. I look forward to this fantastic opportunity to understand how I can improve the systems through which the NHS provides clinical care.”

Maria Balinska, Executive Director, US-UK Fulbright Commission said:

“Our vision is a world where there are no obstacles to learning, understanding and collaboration. Today there are many global challenges to overcome, and the world needs compassionate leaders to tackle them. This cohort of postgraduate awardees will be placing cultural engagement at the heart of their experiences as they undertake ambitious study and research programmes in the US: I am filled with hope for the wonderful collaborations that will ensue.”
