Heart murmur website bags medical student award

An Aberdeen medical student who developed an innovative website about heart murmurs has picked up a prestigious award.

Duncan Ritchie, a third year medical student, won the Sidney Linton Prize for Medical Education in Cardiology from the Royal Society of Medicine for his site which covers a wide range of aspects about heart murmurs including audio files of what they sound like and quiz questions.

The site was initially developed by Duncan at the end of his first year as a training tool for other medical students.

His work was then shortlisted for the prize and he was invited to come to London to present his work before being named as the winner.

Duncan said: “I am naturally delighted to have won the award and with the positive feedback the site is receiving from students. I have an interest in medical education which I intent to continue to pursue. I hope that this website continues to be useful for other students, particularly with integrating the material in a way that can be applied when seeing patients.

"Developing this resource has not only allowed me to win this award but more importantly improved my knowledge of cardiology.”

Professor Alan Denison said: “Congratulations to Duncan on this fantastic award. We are always keen to implement innovative teaching methods and this is a great example of one of our students using his own initiative and experience of a subject to create a resource that can help many for years to come.”
