This is a past event

Part of the Centre for Genome Enabled Biology and Medicine (CGEBM) bioinformatics training course series, this course will introduce you to methods for using modern sequencing data to assemble a genome and further annotate it.

Wide availability of next-generation sequencing technologies have made sequencing genomes, especially those of bacteria, much easier than before. By assembling and annotating genomes, we can compare them to those of similar species and gain insight into the biology of our organism of interest. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to try out a number of softwares for assembly and annotation using both Galaxy and the command line. It is aimed at researchers who are (or will be) carrying out de novo assembly on organisms that do not have a reference genome. If you are also interested in resequencing a species that has a reference genome you may also wish to attend the Alignment and Variant Calling Workshop later in the academic year.

Prerequisites: Participants will need to have taken the CGEBM Introduction to Unix and HPC course or have equivalent relevant experience. If you are in doubt about your existing qualifications, please email Louie van de Lagemaat to discuss. The CGEBM Quality Control course is also highly recommended.

This is an instructor led computer-based tutorial with support demonstrators.

Instructors: CGEBM Bioinformaticians (Dr Antonio Ribeiro, Dr Dami Oresegun, and Dr Louie van de Lagemaat)
