It may have only been instant porridge in a pot, but eating it on the verandah looking out across the bay was a pretty good start to the day. The weatherman said set fair, and it certainly was, clear, sunny, just a little wind and soon to warm up. Photos and away, an immediate bank and then a quick stop to walk down to Smoo Cave before getting on our way. A glorious day for cycling with great views, sweeping roads and the sun at your back.
The long trek around Loch Eriboll was quite beautiful, giving great views in all directions. We caught the other groups around here and rode on over surprisingly lumpy terrain. A few lumps later we dropped across the Kyle on the bridge and in to Tongue, but unimpressed by what was available at the dreary hotels, we opted for an extra 2 miles to the signposted Weaver’s café. This turned out to be a fantastic decision: great views, home-made pies and a lovely couple from Dorset in charge. We texted back and soon everyone found their way to join us in the sunshine.
A 15% sign heralded the most severe climb of the day, which then continued for a good mile to the summit, with views across to Foinaven. We pressed on through Bettyhill and over several more large lumps, getting our first views of Orkney in the distance, before descending to Methvich. Here we were staying in newly built pods, kind of posh garden sheds with bench beds. We unpacked all the gear, gave the bikes a quick once over with the oily rag, ate cake and crisps and wandered off down to the beach.
Lovely spot with surfers, sea kayakers, dog walkers, Common Terns and a Great Northern Diver. One of the group had brought his board and was seen wobbling up the hill, board under arm for an evening in the waves. As ever, we were too keen to find out what we were having for dinner, as we’d pre-ordered before leaving Aberdeen. Several found a repeat of lunch (haggis) or fish and chips for the 5th time. Tomorrow we finally get to the top and John O’Groats, which has been regularly signposted for over 100 miles. We are now over half way and have raised over £20 000 on the JustGiving pages which is great.
