Attending the 2024 RCOphth Annual Congress at the ICC in Belfast from May 20-23 was a transformative experience. Presenting my research on diabetic retinopathy and prediction models was an incredible opportunity to share my work with experts and peers.
Throughout the conference, I immersed myself in a variety of sessions that expanded my knowledge in ophthalmology. The session on acute anterior uveitis explored the complex nature of this eye inflammation and its management strategies. The talks on managing diabetic retinopathy discussed cutting-edge laser and surgical treatments, providing practical insights into handling complications. I was fascinated by the advanced 3D imaging techniques for slit lamp examinations, which enhance the accuracy of diagnoses and treatment planning. Simplifying the Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) procedure with practical tips was another highlight. The comprehensive look at recognizing and treating various lumps, bumps, and bulges on the eye surface was enlightening. Learning about the latest protocols and treatments for retinopathy of prematurity, which can prevent vision loss in premature infants, was invaluable. The findings from the National Ophthalmology Database audit on improving outcomes for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) were particularly insightful. Additionally, exploring emerging treatments for AMD and diabetic retinopathy showcased promising advancements on the horizon.
Networking was another significant aspect of the conference. Meeting professionals and fellow students passionate about ophthalmology was inspiring and opened doors for future collaborations. I also attended a workshop on medical statistics, specifically tailored to ophthalmology. This knowledge will enhance my research skills and improve my study designs. Leaving the RCOphth Annual Congress, I felt inspired and more certain than ever that ophthalmology is the path for me. I am excited to continue my journey in this dynamic field and contribute to the advancements in eye care.
