Linguistics staff visited St. Machar Academy on 17th January to challenge S1 pupils to a series of linguistics-themed puzzles.
The S1 group at St. Machar have been flexing their problem-solving skills in recent weeks in their 'S1 Escape Room Masterclass' programme. As part of this curriculum-enrichment course, the pupils have been designing their own escape room activities.
Linguistics lecturers, Dr Dawn Leslie, Dr Elspeth Edelstein and Dr William Barras visited the cohort this week to encourage use of language-based problem-solving.
The pupils carried out a series of UK Linguistics Olympiad-inspired challenges which included 'Cracking Karelian' to discover a combination-locked task and 'Code-breaking Cuneiform' to create their own Cuneiform translations.
