Matthew Machin-Autenrieth (Music) organises a conference and workshop at Casa Arabe, a cultural diplomacy organisation in Cordoba, over the 10-11 May 2023.
Entitled "The 'Spanish-Moroccan Brotherhood' and the Spanish Protectorate under Debate" [La ‘hermandad hispano-marroquí’ y el Protectorado español a debate], the conference forms part of Exposition of Moroccan Art, Cordoba 1946 - a display of photographs and film from a colonial exhibition in the city during the height of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco and the fascist Franco regime, which will run until July 2023.
With a range of invited speakers from Morocco, Spain and the US, the conference seeks to analyse the historical context of the Exposition, including the role of the arts in legitimating the Spanish colonial administration and the emergence of Moroccan nationalism on the path towards independence in 1956. On the day following the conference, Casa Arabe will host an introductory workshop to Arab-Andalusian music, led by the musician and musicologist Amin Chachoo from Tetuan. The workshop will offer a brief overview of Arab-Andalusian music, introducing participants to the basic elements of this art form - a tradition that featured extensively at the Exposition in 1946.
