Pioneering research undertaken by Calum Carswell into the potential role of choirs in the UK Charismatic Evangelical church has been published by the peer-review journal of the Society for Liturgical Study, Anaphora. The article focuses on the research experiment that was undertaken to examine if and how Contemporary Sacred Choral Music can benefit band-led worship. This was done by organising a Charismatic Evangelical service in London which incorporated choral music, specifically composed by Calum, into a band-led worship setting. The findings of the experiment suggested that, not only can choral music benefit worship, but it does so by causing an aesthetic appreciation that leads to a transcendent engagement with heaven. These findings subsequently led to the composition of music that was designed to compositionally explore this phenomena.
