Join Dr Dan Wall for a talk about the impact of A.J. Cronin's 1937 Novel
75 years on from the establishment of the National Health Service, attention has frequently been drawn to the role of A.J. Cronin’s novel The Citadel in exposing the corrupt practices which were rife in medical circles prior to its foundation, and to the stark inequalities which existed in Britain as a result of the difficulties that many people had in accessing healthcare during periods of ill health.
In this talk Dr Dan Wall will consider the part played by the novel in raising public and political awareness of the state of the healthcare system in Britain and explore the claims that the novel’s lasting impact constitutes one of the most important interventions by a novelist in public debates during the last one hundredyears.
