An author event with multi-award-winning crime writer Val McDermid, introducing her latest work, 1979, the first in a brand-new series of novels featuring Allie Burns

Val McDermid is one of the biggest names in crime writing. Her novels have been translated into 40 languages and sold over 16 million copies worldwide. Well known for her series of suspense novels, The Wire in the Blood, which was adapted for television starring Robson Green, her most recent work includes DCI Karen Pirie thriller Still Life. and How the Dead Speak, featuring psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. In Imagine a Country, Val and co-editor Jo Sharp ask more than 100 contributors to imagine their dream country, while in My Scotland, she takes readers to the landscapes she has known all her life, and the places where her characters reside, accompanied by over 100 stunning photographs.

1979 is the first in a brand-new series of novels introducing Allie Burns, set at pivotal moments of the past four decades. It is the winter of discontent and ambitious young journalist Allie Burns is on the hunt for the story that will change her career. The only woman working the Glasgow news desk, she needs a ground-breaking scoop for the boy's club to take her seriously. Soon Allie and fellow journalist Danny Sullivan are exposing the criminal underbelly of respectable Scotland. They risk making powerful enemies – and Allie won’t stop there. After all, she is a woman in a man's world and nobody can be trusted.  

This event will be hosted in-person in the Arts Lecture Theatre, Kings College Campus, University of Aberdeen with all Covid-19 safety measures in place. There are limited in-person tickets and it will also be streamed live online.  Please let us know if you have registered but cannot attend as soon as possible as in-person places are limited.
