How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected new music? In what ways has it transformed how we make music and its aesthetics? How can grassroots contemporary music thrive during a pandemic and in a post-Covid world?

These are the questions that faced Mexico’s Attica!, Scotland’s Ensemble Thing and composers Jimena Maldonado and Jan Foote, as they embarked on a trans-Atlantic collaboration in 2020. Initiated to develop a sustainable model of international musical collaboration, the project became urgent and essential in the confines of a global pandemic.

Face to Face: music and conversation is the culmination of this international collaboration. On 11th and 12th of June, Attica! and Ensemble Thing will present three online concerts, including a live performance where musicians in Mexico and Scotland will play together. Joined by a cast of world-leading music makers, we will consider the horizons of new music in a post-pandemic world. How do we better support each other and creative production through this crisis and beyond?

Guest panellists include: Michael Gordon, Jorge Sosa, Ruta Vitkauskaite, Angélica Negrón, Emily De Simone, Andreas Levisianos, and Christos Atzinas. Performances of new works by: Jimena Maldonado, Fernanda Cabral K, Thomas Butler, Josué Collado, Jan Foote, Bernardo Cáceres Martínez, John De Simone and Andrés Guadarrama. The University is represented through Dr John De Simone, artistic director and founder of Ensemble Thing.
