The Knight and the Lion

"Lancelot and Guinevere"

Yet when Lancelot is brought before the Queen, she will neither look at him nor offer him one word. Lancelot is ready to die from grief when she whom he loves spurns him in this way.

A girl who waits on the Queen asks her:

'My lady, why are you angry with this man who has come so far and done so much for you?'

'He did not do it out of love,' Guinevere replies, 'for love does not hesitate no matter what - and yet this man waited two whole steps before leaping onto the cart.'

Quickly the girl explains to Lancelot, who falls to his knees.

'May God save me from such a crime ever again,' he begs. Then the Queen is glad to pardon him, and they spend their time together very joyfully. For each loves the other so much that they have plenty to say and look at and enjoy in each other's company.

At last the Queen asks about Gawain and wonders what has happened to him. Lancelot agrees to search for him. The freed captives will go with him.

'I am safe and well-treated here with King Bademagu. Meleagant cannot harm me now,' Guinevere tells Lancelot. 'I will wait here a while longer, until you return with Gawain. Then we can all go home together.'

Lancelot and all the people of Logres set off together along the leafy paths of Gorre. They have not gone far when a Dwarf overtakes them, riding on a great sandy horse:

'Which of you is Lancelot?' the Dwarf inquires.

'I am he,' Lancelot replies.

'Then come with me,' says the Dwarf, 'for I shall take you to a good place where I have something interesting to show you. It is to do with the Queen.'
